The Stables' People
The Stables Restaurant & Bar is owned by Damian (Damo) Richards and his partner Hania Stronach. Both Damian and Hania worked at The Stables for many years before taking over the business in October 2014.
Damian is a qualified professional chef and managed The Stables for 15 years. Hania worked for 10 years as The Stables duty manager. This has given them both a sound understanding of the needs of clients and they now aim to do things even better enhancing the experience each customer has at The Stables.
Both Nelson locals, Damian and Hania take great pride in the region and supporting other local people and businesses. Their aim for The Stables is simple: to be the best in Richmond!
The Stables' History
The Stables Restaurant & Tavern emerged from the rubble of an historic building that once stood as a monument to New Zealand's early thoroughbred industry.
The Man
Henry, a pioneer farmer who arrived in the new Nelson settlement from Staffordshire in 1842, was known as the 'Father of the New Zealand turf' for his expertise in breeding fine race horses. Racing was Henry’s chief love. He began importing stock from France. In 1851 when 33 horses arrived, New Zealand’s first stud for breeding thoroughbreds was established. Redwood’s black and red colours became known all round Australasia. The Building The stables he built in the early 1850’s next to his home in Appleby’s foothills stand restored and recycled, brick by brick, today as The Stables Restaurant & Tavern. The original stables floor has remained in place and is protected by a heritage listing. The Stables Restaurant & Tavern that stands in Richmond today, is as close to the original form as possible and contains more than 35,000 original bricks. Restoration of the Redwood Stables was a fitting memorial to an outstanding pioneer in the district and Father of the New Zealand Turf. |
